How do I qualify?

AP and related professionals who are interested in obtaining the CAPP or CAPA designation must take and pass the appropriate certification exam. Those who are interested in sitting for the certification exam and achieving the designation must meet the candidate qualification criteria outlined below. If these qualifications are not met, candidates may proceed in sitting for the exam but, if passed, may not use the designation until all criteria have been met.

Elements of CAPP and CAPA certification

  • Consistently demonstrate strong ethical/moral behavior
  • Apply, and be approved, to take the CAPP or CAPA certification exam
    • Provide employment verification
    • Meet and provide proof of specified education/experience criteria
  • Agree to uphold the Code of Ethics

CAPP program

Education/experience criteria

The CAPP program is appropriate for AP and related professionals in a supervisory or managerial position. CAPP candidates should possess the following minimum accounts payable management or related experience with the applicable degree as follows:

  • 2 years or more managerial experience with a bachelors degree or higher
  • 3 years or more managerial experience with an associates degree or higher
  • 5 years or more managerial experience with no degree

The management/professional experience criteria listed above must have been accomplished within one year preceding the exam date to be considered valid, and can be substantiated in conjunction with employment verification through written notice/letter from the candidate's supervisor.

Professional qualifications

AP related positions that qualify for the CAPP certification exam are:

  • AP Audit Manager
  • Senior Finance Manager (CFO, Controller, Director with AP Responsibilities)
  • Management of an AP Process with Direct AP Responsibilities

CAPA program

Education/experience criteria

The CAPA program is ideal for AP or related specialists who perform operational functions without supervisory responsibilities. CAPA candidates should possess the following minimum accounts payable or related experience with the applicable degree as follows:

  • 1 year or more related experience with an associate degree or higher
  • 3 years or more experience with no degree

The work experience criteria listed above must have been accomplished within one year preceding the exam date to be considered valid, and can be substantiated in conjunction with employment verification through written notice/letter from the candidate's supervisor.

Professional qualifications

AP related positions that qualify for the CAPA certification exam are:

  • Recovery Audit
  • General Finance and Accounting
  • Support or Implementation of an AP Process/Function
  • AP Auditor
